On my way to work today, I noticed that the amount of car accidents had increased on my route. This can only be blamed on the Dick Dastardly of games, Pokémon Go!
“What is Pokémon Go?” you ask as you crawl out from under your rock. Well, it’s an app that finally allows players to capture creatures from the Pokémon TV show – remember thing you or your kids/siblings/cousins were obsessed with? Well, it’s back like everything else from the 90s and early 2000s.
I don’t much care for viral things but darn it, is Pokémon Go the most viral of viral. It was released a week ago and blew up over night. It’s so popular that its servers are constantly crashing and it’s actually next to impossible to play the game. I have noticed there are only a few hours I can hop on it.
Normally, I’m not a fan of “how to make your post go viral” posts. I don’t think there’s really any way to make your post go viral anymore than you can just start a blog and the next day have a billion readers. It takes a little work, you know? So what does a silly game about pocket monster have to do about your blog? Well, there are some things we can learn from the game.
1) Capture a feeling. Pokémon Go has the nostalgia thing going for it. While you may of never heard of it before its launch, people who missed and wanted the next stage of Pokémon were paying attention.
2) Be adaptable to a wide audience. While the nostalgic kids may have gotten in first, I was quickly introduced to it by them and likewise introduced my family. (Which, my dad is obsessed with the game.) There’s just something nice that Pokémon fans and novices can both enjoy the game.
3) Include a call to action. The whole point of Pokémon Go is to go. Go outside, drive around exploring (and pull to the side and stop if you want to catch a Pokémon), brag about your collection to your friends, join a team, etc. I personally have no interest in battling – it’s the collecting each Pokémon that I’m after.
So there you have it! Steps that you can use to hopefully go as viral as Pikachu.
